Samsung Galaxy Alpha Lands on TELUS for $180 on a Two-Year Contract

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha was an experiment in metal for Samsung and it is being well received in the looks department, just not in the specification area – the price is for a premium device, but the display screams mid-range.  The Galaxy Alpha was officially released on September 26 and it has been an exclusive to Bell and Virgin Mobile and will soon be on its way to Videotron.  TELUS now has the Galaxy Alpha up on its website for $180 on a two-year contract or term and $700 if you want to buy it outright.  You will have your choice of Black, White or Gold.

The Galaxy Alpha sports a premium design with an all-metal frame that is slightly curved and sculptured at the corners to help in case you were to drop it accidentally.  It definitely would look right at home in the executive boardroom, but the techies would find it a little under spec’d for their tastes.  It is a great size with a 4.7-inch display, but in this world of FHD and QHD displays, we only find an HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels with 312 Pixels-Per-Inch (PPI).  It does have Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor clocked at 2.5GHz – like that found in the Samsung Galaxy S5 – and comes with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.

The Galaxy Alpha has 12MP main camera with auto-focus and an LED flash and for the front-facing camera (FFC) there is a 2.1MP for video chatting and selfies…no OIS to be found anywhere.  A meager 1860mAh battery powers the device, which is running Android 4.4.4 KitKat out-of-the-box.  It measures 132.4mm x 65.5mm x 6.7mm and weighs in at 115 grams.  It does come with a fingerprint scanner in the front home button and has a Private Mode – the Galaxy Alpha will create a private folder for you to store your most sensitive documents in and the fingerprint scanner will allow you access to it.  Samsung also brought over the Heart Rate Sensor and their Ultra Power Saving Mode (UPSM) to increase your battery life…it turns off the color and all but the essential functions.
