Sony is well known for manufacturing its camera sensors, a business which is booming for this Japanese tech giant and it seems it will grow further in the future. Despite the fact they produce smartphone camera sensors and one of the best professional camera, Sony had issues delivering a quality camera with its own smartphones for a long time. Luckily, that’s not the case anymore. For a while now Sony’s handsets have truly great cameras, especially company’s newest flagship, Xperia Z3. Three professional photographers decided to take Xperia Z3 for a spin and see how it does. Those guys are named Greg Funnell, Ben Thomas and J.N. Silva and are from London, Melbourne and New York, respectively.
All of these guys got an Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact handset and tested them out. They were told to share the results on Sony’s Xperia Photo Academy, which is actually a rather new website. This website is actually a great place to get some photography tips and tricks, as well as share images and collaborations with other photographers. Xperia Z3 comes with a Sony’s Cybershot and Handycam tech and we’re talking about a 20.7 (1/2.3″ aperture) Exmor RS sensor here. Further more, this camera has a 25mm G Lens and a high ISO 12800 sensitivity to boot. Xperia Z3 (and Z3 Compact alike, same sensor) can deliver really great photographs. Let’s see what these guys came up with.
The first five images in the gallery down below were taken by Ben, he used the Xperia Z3 Compact smartphone and “Creative Effect” camera app. He selected the “Miniature” effect to capture some landmarks in Melbourne as you can see down below. “As I was developing the photographs for my ‘Cityshrinker’ project, I used specialised tilt shift camera lenses to create the miniature effect and it’s incredible to think that I was able to achieve the miniaturisation effect using the Xperia Z3 Compact camera. The smartphone easily captures images and provides a simple process that you can play about with, to create your own photos with the tilt shift effect. Anybody who is interested in the style should definitely try it out, as you can produce something that is both visually striking and endlessly creative,” said Ben.
Photos 6-10 were taken by Greg, and this is what he had to say: “A lot of my work focuses on capturing mood and atmosphere – and so much of this comes down to lighting. The Xperia Z3 works really well in low-light, so it has enabled me to shoot on my phone what I previously would have had to shoot on my DSLR. With a powerful camera built into a smartphone that’s always with me, I have the freedom to visually explore London’s vibrant nightlife – capturing the city as it comes alive after dark.” The last batch of photos was taken by J.N. Silva, images 11-15. He used the Xperia Z3 to capture the shadows of New York by catching images which provide lots of darkness and light. He took some shots of architecture and rooftops.
