It seems these days, at least in the Chinese region it’s all about who can produce the most inexpensive devices. Cheapest device usually ends up being a title held by up and coming OEM’s like Meizu or Xiaomi, at least it seems that way since their now fairly well know outside of their respective markets, and after Meizu’s recent unveiling of their new M1 Note device it was easy to assume they would now have one of the least expensive devices on the market upon launch. ASUS wasn’t waiting around to see Meizu offer one of the most affordable devices ever though, and have answered with their own inexpensive offering called the ASUS Pegasus X002, a $130 smartphone with a 5-inch display.
The Pegasus comes with a 5-inch display resolution of 720P which may not seem like much but at the price that ASUS is asking it’s actually not bad. On the inside, you’ll find ASUS has packed this phone with a quad-core 64-bit processor, 2GB of RAM and a 8MP rear-facing main camera. It also comes with a 5MP front-facing camera for video chat and selfies. We’re fast seeing the front cameras with higher MP come to market which is kind of interesting if you think again about the price of the Pegasus. You’d expect to see something more like a 2MP or even a 1.3MP camera on the front for a $130 price tag.
The Pegasus X002 will of course be sporting ASUS’s ZenUI and will have Android 4.4 KitKat on board, and it’s powered by a decent 2,500mAh battery which should be more than enough to handle the tasks and functions of an entry-level device like this. The device is also LTE capable and has 16GB of on-board storage, which can be expanded upon via the microSD card slot although there was no mention of how big of a microSD card this phone would support. Since it’s entry level it’s likely 32GB. We probably won’t see this device come stateside and ASUS may very well keep the production and launch inside of China, but if you were able to get your hands on one would you fork out $130 for the ASUS Pegasus X002? Or would you save your money and scrounge together another $70 and hold out till you could buy the 2nd generation Moto G?
