This is the time of year where rumors start flying for the next iteration of devices. While many won’t even receive their new phones for another week when Christmas comes around there are plenty speculating and hoping that the next iteration of their favorite smartphone is everything they ever wanted. Samsung usually launches its Galaxy S phones around April or May, as has been the trend for the past couple of years, but there’s a lot of speculation that they may be pushing up the R&D cycle once again thanks to the poor sales of the Galaxy S5 relative to their financial projections. Now it looks like Samsung could announce the Galaxy S6 as early as CES in early January, which is only a few weeks away!
We’ve seen plenty of information about the Galaxy S6 leak out for it not to be announced earlier than usual for Samsung, including the alleged metal frame of the device suggesting that it’ll be built like the Galaxy Note 4 is. Then we also heard rumors of a possible Edge variant of the device as we’ve seen with the Note 4 as well, although those don’t seem to be as well grounded in reality. Now there’s an R&D unit that was sent to Samsung India that was found via Zauba, a website that tracks imports into the country. This unit has a model number of SM-G920F, which suggests that it’s the European variant of the Galaxy S6 rather than the Indian or Korean one.
Then there’s also the price, 18,938 INR, which is somewhere in the ballpark of $300 USD. This is obviously just a price sent for import purposes and not the actual price of the device, although it would be interesting to see Samsung cut its prices considerably on its next flagship device given the extreme competition Xiaomi and other Chinese manufacturers have placed on Samsung throughout Asia. After all the Galaxy S6 is supposedly given the name of Project Zero to say that Samsung is starting fresh with this device in every aspect, so why wouldn’t cost cutting to better compete with up and coming companies be one of those reasons?
