ASUS to Launch Smaller 5-inch ZenFone 2 Model?

During this year’s CES there wasn’t too much for us to focus on where mobile was concerned, but one of the small surprises of the show was of course ASUS’ ZenFone 2. Following on from the original ZenFone lineup, the ZenFone 2 was launched as a 5.5-inch 1080p device with some impressive specs for a very small price tag. ASUS also introduced a camera-focused model of the device with a large camera on the rear of the device, but there’s now talk of a more manageable 5-inch version to hit the market as well as the larger 5.5-inch models.

We got to spend some hands on time with the ZenFone 2 during CES 2015 and we were pretty impressed with the Intel-powered device, especially considering its asking price. A device at 5.5-inches however isn’t going to please absolutely everyone, despite larger devices being more popular throughout Asia. Taiwanese site, Sogi is reporting that ASUS could launch a 5-inch version of the device shortly after the original has gone on shelves. With no leaked images to go on just yet, it looks like we’ll be waiting for quite a while to see whether or not this is in fact the case. Considering ASUS launched the ZenFone 4, 5 and 6 last year though, there is a precedent for ASUS launching different sizes in their smartphones and if they want to appeal to more markets and consumers, one size doesn’t fit all.

Not everyone wants to buy a fairly large smartphone like the 5.5-inch model, and launching a 5-inch version afterwards would be smart business practice if you were to ask me. As for pricing, the original starts at just $200 US (with that 4GB version costing more, of course) so we’d be surprised if the 5-inch model were to go on sale for much less than that. With the ASUS name taking off steadily in Android thanks to the original ZenFone lineup and the ZenWatch, it’s going to be interesting to see just how well they fare for the rest of 2015.
