The Galaxy Alpha that Samsung launched last year was a step in the right direction for the build quality of their devices. It wasn’t so much a case that Samsung devices were built poorly, but in the face of the iPhone and the HTC One, plastic builds like the Galaxy S5 weren’t ‘premium’ enough for some customers. The Galaxy Alpha was the first of many devices to be built using an aluminum frame that gave a more solid feel in the hand and arguably much better looks. The new design language was also used in the Galaxy Note 4 to close out the year and we’re all now expect a metallic Galaxy S6 to kick off 2015.
With Mobile World Congress just a month away, we’re all waiting to see what Samsung has in store for their latest flagship device. For a long time now, we’ve heard that the company was to release a device built using a unibody construction. Now though, a “Samsung Electronics Official” has been speaking to Korean publication, DDaily, and has hinted strongly that the Galaxy S6 would instead be built using an aluminum frame construction similar to the Galaxy Alpha and the Galaxy Note 4. According to the same source, this could result in a device without a removable battery, as well.
When we think about it, this sort of thing does make sense. After all, Samsung now has experience in producing devices with this sort of build, and it would continue the new design language made popular by the Alpha. Still, those looking for more of a change in design with the next Galaxy S6 might be disappointed in a similar design. No matter what though, it looks like rumor season for the Galaxy S6 is officially open, and I’m sure we’ll be hearing more reports like these out of South Korea until the device launches, which will hopefully be during next month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
