Mobile World Congress is just a few weeks away now, and we’ll expecting the big names in the mobile space to announce something pretty special for the year ahead. We’re pretty certain that Samsung will be announcing the Galaxy S6 during this year’s event (and possibly some new tablets) and HTC is rumored to announce the HTC One (M9), with Sony set to unveil yet another Xperia Z device. We’ve yet to hear from Sony on when they’ll be holding their press conference (sadly), but a new report suggests that the Japanese giant will be holding their press conference on March 2nd, the first day MWC 2015 officially opens.
We’re expecting Sony to announce the latest Xperia Z smartphone, as they did this time last year during Mobile World Congress 2014. However, we have heard rumors that suggest the Japanese giant isn’t in a position to announce their latest and greatest smartphone. I’m fairly confident that we will see the latest from Sony next month, but there’s always a chance that the company has rethought their plans after a rocky time. Sony as a whole hasn’t had it great recently, with the Sony pictures hack and pretty poor financial results from the mobile division resulting in the cut of 1,000 jobs. A fresh new design and new features could be just what Sony needs to bring them out of their dark times though.
Last year’s Xperia Z2 was announced during MWC 2014 and it was one of the best releases of the year, and my current smartphone of choice. The problem however, was that Sony has been releasing smartphones on a six-month cycle and the successor to the Z2, the Xperia Z3 didn’t offer much more than its predecessor. With the same sort of design still in use from the original Xperia Z, Sony’s design language is certainly looking a little tired. On the inside though, Sony offers one of the best camera experiences on any smartphone out there, as well as great specs and performance.
A device that could well be the Xperia Z4 recently gained certification in Sony’s home country of Japan, sporting specs such as a Snapdragon 810 CPU, a 16-megapixel rear-facing camera, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It all sounds very much like a Sony device, but is it the Xperia Z4? We’ll have to wait and see whether or not Sony will announce such a device during Mobile World Congress next month.
