This year, ASUS has really stepped up it’s game when it comes to smartphones. Before 2015, ASUS had been making smartphones, but they hadn’t really caught our eyes, until the Zenfone 2 was announced at CES in January. The Zenfone 2 recently got priced, and the model with 4GB of RAM is coming in at under $300 unlocked. Pretty crazy. ASUS also announced the Zenfone Zoom back at CES. Which has a rather large 13MP camera on the back, along with a dual flash. It’s meant to compete with the likes of the Nokia Pureview. Hands on with the Zenfone Zoom have been pretty limited at both CES and MWC as they’ve kept it locked up tight.
Now it looks like ASUS will be putting out another Zenfone soon and this one will be selfie-centric. We can’t be too surprised at that now can we? ASUS’ CFO, David Chang, revealed yesterday that the company is looking to release a new low-cost Zenfone for the selfie enthusiasts. However, they didn’t mention anything else about the device. ASUS’ Chairman, Jonney Shih, also revealed that the company has upped their sales target to 25 million smartphones for 2015. Previously, it was just 17 million.
So what could we be looking at from ASUS in this “selfie centric” Zenfone? Well a few things. ASUS could go the route that OPPO has with the front-facing camera that can flip around. So you have basically one camera that can be on the front or back. Or maybe they do something like HTC did with the Desire EYE they announced last year. Where they throw on a nice 13MP camera with dual LED flash on the front. It did actually take great pictures with the front-facing camera. But as you’d expect, it did make the smartphone pretty tall.
ASUS normally announces some new products at Computex in Taiwan. Which takes place the first week of June this year. So we could see this phone there, or might be later on in September at IFA in Germany. Are any of you interested in a selfie-centric Zenfone from ASUS?
