It was only a matter of time that the old and faithful Google Nexus 5 smartphone would be phased out…after all, its replacement, the new Google Nexus 6 came out last year. As close as the first of February, we reported that both the 16GB and 32GB models were in-stock in the Google Play Store. However, with Google’s December announcement that the Nexus 5 was no longer in production, we knew this day had to be fast approaching. Only the traditional black model was left to hang on, but today, both the 16GB and 32GB are listed as “no longer available for sale.” You can still find a few hanging around at a couple of websites at higher than list price, but even they will soon disappear.
The Nexus 5, made by LG, appears to be the last ‘affordable’ Nexus smartphone if Google continues to follow the precedent set with the Motorola made Nexus 6. The Nexus 5 employed the sought after 5-inch display in Full HD (1920 x 1080) – just the right size…not too large or too small. The popular Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor clocked at 2.26GHz powered the device. It packed 2GB of RAM and either 16GB or 32GB of non-expandable internal memory – Google does not like microSD card slots and would rather we use the cloud for data storage. With this processor and 2GB of RAM running pure vanilla Android, the device was smooth as butter and quick as lightning.
With its notoriously mediocre 2300mAh battery life and pictures from its 8MP main camera, it was not a technical wizard – but a solid device, a great everyday driver and a fair price for its specifications. At $349 for the 16GB model and only $399 for the 32GB model, you were getting one hell of a bargain. Fast-forward to the new Nexus 6 and things changed dramatically – both the specifications and price shot up into the realm of a real flagship device. Gone is the minimalistic look and great bargain and enter a huge cutting edge phablet with a price to match.
