We’ve been hearing for weeks that Sony wouldn’t be announcing a new Xperia Z4 smartphone at Mobile World Congress this year, and while those statements may have been correct, that doesn’t mean that Sony didn’t have anything to offer. They have just announced the new Sony Xperia M4 Aqua, which will be their attempt to raise the bar for the mid-range device tier. Sony is using the Xperia M4 Aqua to re-focus their mid-range offerings bringing in a device that continues to be a leader in mobile camera offerings compared to other handsets in the same range, while also packing the phone with great hardware for an all around fairly low cost.
The Xperia M4 Aqua will cost consumers €299 and will be available for purchase in 80 different countries at launch, and across 100 different carrier partners in all available regions. The phone is slated to hit retail stores in the Spring of 2015. As for the specifications, the Xperia M4 Aqua will be sporting a 5-inch 1280 x 720p display with 294 ppi, a 13MP rear facing camera with an f2.0 aperture, coupled with Sony’s intelligent superior auto mode to take the hassle out of great mobile photography. Coming equipped with a name like M4 Aqua, users can expect full waterproof capabilities here with a cap-less micro USB charging setup, Android 5.0 Lollipop, all powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 615 octa-core CPU built off of the 64-bit architecture.
Like most of Sony’s recent past devices, they’re boasting a two day battery life with the Xperia M4 Aqua which is powered by a 2,400mAh battery, and it will be available in four different colors including White, Black, Coral, and Silver options. The 13MP RFC is powered by Sony’s Exmor RS mobile sensor which features ISO 3200 sensitivity, which paired together with the superior auto mode and 52 different scenarios aims to promote excellent, vivid shots in low light, while also giving users high quality shots when met with strong backlit subjects and scenes. The rear camera also sports a wide angle lens to capture everything in the frame, as does the front facing camera which is set at 5MP for great quality selfie shots. It weighs in at just 136g so it should feel plenty light in the pocket too. As for storage, like all of Sony’s recent devices it carries an expandable storage option through the microSD card slot and it has 8GB of internal storage space. So far hasn’t revealed pricing for any other regions other than Europe, but those details can’t be too far off as the device is scheduled to launch in the next few months.
