Mobile World Congress is beginning to wind down in Barcelona, Spain this week. We have seen some amazing technology showcased as well as a lot of new and innovative ideas that will make the Internet of Things (IoT) a reality. One of these emerging technologies is that of wearable tech, notably in the area of wrist wearables such as watches and health and fitness trackers. But innovations extend outside the watch itself, and a whole slew of new ideas have been presented recently such as uses for automotive, fitness, and eye-tracking.
TheEyeTribe hopes to make its innovative mark on the world of wearable technology, by extending its eye-tracking technology to smartwatches. The company already has working technology on the tablet and PC space, so the move to wearable technology only seems natural. TheEyeTribe believes that the eye-tracking technology will aid users by making it easier to manage their smartwatch applications. One such use that was noted by CEO Sune Alstrup in an interview with CNET, was the ability to combine eye-tracking with an accelerometer which would allow the display of the watch to turn on only when you are looking at the watch, thus helping to conserve battery life, which has been an issue on some devices. You could also use your eye movement to switch through applications or to navigate within them. This is very handy to those of us who may have larger fingers that make operating such a tiny screen a bit problematic.
Eye-tracking technology has many uses in today’s tech world. It can make navigation easier, help those who may be disabled and make for a more immersive gaming experience. This technology has already seen great success in the world of personal computers and is making great headway in the mobile device sector. With wearable technology in its beginning stages, new technologies such as TheEyeTribes eye-tracking technology will make for more interesting and immersive experiences for this emerging mobile space. Currently this is a prototype technology for the company, but it is one they seem to want to grow.
