Yet another Lollipop update rolling out. After AT&T announced that the Galaxy S4 was getting Lollipop earlier this week, an upset customer contacted them on Twitter about it. Which I can’t blame him for being upset that the Galaxy S4 was getting Lollipop before the Galaxy S5. AT&T told them that the update is scheduled to be rolling out on April 8th, and that’s today.
The update to the Galaxy S5 on AT&T shouldn’t look a whole lot different. With Touchwiz being on top, you won’t see much of the material design, unfortunately. But you should be getting that tinted status bar, which looks hot. You also won’t be getting that new version of Touchwiz which the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are launching with, unfortunately. However, you will be on the latest version of Android – well almost. It’s not Android 5.1, but it is Lollipop. So you’ll also be getting all kinds of behind-the-scenes fixes that will make the device perform smoother. There’s also some revamped notifications that look pretty awesome on the Galaxy S5’s display.
Currently, we have no idea when AT&T will start rolling out the Galaxy S5 update. They typically start pushing out around noon EDT. And that could be because AT&T is headquartered in Texas, but who knows. Normally I’d say start mashing that update button. But remember AT&T only lets you check for an update once every 24 hours. So don’t start mashing it just yet. Unless you’re prepared to wait 24 hours before you can check it again. They do that to keep the traffic on their OTA server nice and smooth, so nothing breaks down. So it makes sense, but it does enrage their customers, unfortunately.
This is yet another device getting updated to Lollipop. Just last night, Google released the platform numbers for April, and Lollipop had grown to 5%. Not a huge number, but it’s growing faster than previous versions of Android had, which is a good thing. KitKat is still top dog with almost half of the Android devices out there. Sitting at 41%. With the Galaxy S5 getting Lollipop today, I’d expect those numbers for Lollipop to rise quite a bit when we see them in May.
