Even though the Google Nexus 5 is technically an unlocked smartphone, with CDMA support for Sprint’s network. Sprint still does post the changelog for updates. We’ve seen this with previous OTA’s for the Nexus 5. Today, Sprint posted that the Nexus 5 should be getting Android 5.1.1 at some point this week. And in fact, the build number is even new. The build number we’re looking at is LMY48B.
The changelog that Sprint has posted is pretty non-descriptive. Basically saying it’s the update to Android 5.1.1 and features. What’s interesting is that the date says March 11th, but the page says it was updated today, May 13th. So looks like someone got the day mixed up, especially since March 11th was the day the last update went out.
Recently we’ve seen Android 5.1.1 head out to the Nexus 9, so there’s a good possibility that the Nexus 5 could be getting the update this week. And if the Sprint Nexus 5 is getting it, then the unlocked version should also be getting the update within a few days. We should also see factory images coming out at the same time as those OTA’s come out. And as soon as they come out, we’ll be sure to inform everyone, as well as tell them how to update to the latest version of Android.
The Android 5.1.1 update isn’t a large one, and is mostly a bug fixer, as most Lollipop OTA’s have been since the initial 5.0 launch last year. Which is pretty typical when you roll out a huge overhaul like Google did with Lollipop. We are expecting to see Android M announced at Google I/O in just a few weeks, with it being launched in the fall. However, we don’t expect a huge update from Google this time around. Hopefully it will be a bit more stable than Lollipop has been. As well as adding some new features that Google have left out of Lollipop, like the silent mode. Even though they are pushing us to use their new interruptions features. Either way, we’ll see it on May 28th during Google’s 2.5 hour long keynote.
