Every month comes the various reports and figures detailing how the android market (and smartphone market) in general is holding up. Each report does not typically see any massive changes, but over time, these collectively build to offer a more comprehensive view of the smartphone landscape. Right on time, the latest figures from comScore have now been made public and once again highlight what has been happening in the smartphone sector over the last quarter. For those new to comScore, each month we get their figures and they detail a three-month period. Today’s figures relate directly to the three-month period ending (the end of) March 2015 and are compared against the previous three-month period ending (the end of) December 2014 and is directly relevant to the U.S. landscape. In terms of those two periods, the figures look at both the top smartphone platforms and also the top smartphone manufacturers. In terms of the platforms, Android continues to be dominant and in the top position. However, compared to the previous quarter, the results show a 0.7% drop with Android pulling in 52.4% of the U.S. market share (down from 53.1%). As to be expected, Apple remained in second place and seemed to have picked up what Android dropped, with their market share increasing from 41.6% to 42.6%. Third and fourth place were occupied by Microsoft and Blackberry respectively. Who both saw minor drops with Microsoft dropping from 3.4% down to 3.3% and Blackberry dropping from 1.8% down to 1.6%.
In terms of overall smartphone manufacturers and again consistent with previous reports Apple remains the single biggest smartphone manufacturer in the U.S. market. As mentioned Apple saw an increase in this respect, up from their last quarter 41.6% to 42.6%. Samsung maintained second place in the U.S., although they did see a drop in their specific share of 1.4%, with their figures falling from 29.7% down to 28.3%. Third place was LG who saw a slight increase up from 8.0% to 8.4%. Fourth place was occupied by Motorola who saw a minor decrease down from 5.2% to 5.0%. While fifth place was HTC who realized a very minor increase up from 3.7% to 3.8%. As such, there were no specific major changes with this month’s report, although it does seem both Samsung and Android saw slight decreases.
