According to Jose Arturo, who is a Verizon Test Engineer, it appears that the Droid Turbo will be getting Android Lollipop in Mid-June. As many of you have been waiting on Lollipop for quite sometime, you’re probably pissed. Luckily Arturo opens up a bit how the update process works. One of the bigger issues for Verizon is having the original CDMA Voice network. Which makes swapping from CDMA to LTE a bit more tricky. Especially as they are looking to roll VoLTE out in the near future.
“…The unique situation Verizon finds itself is having its original CDMA voice network.. Hard for us to dance around between LTE and CDMA to support VoLTE due to best signal strength in different environments. So with each device update, there is usually a few Qualcomm patches to improve that transition and try to cover all possible calling scenarios our customers may face in our network. And also supporting XLTE new bands. Some device updates turn on a new LTE band on a phone that might have been dormant in an earlier software build. ”
Arturo also goes on to say that Qualcomm isn’t perfect and sometimes when they fix something they break something else. Which isn’t just unique to Qualcomm. We’ve seen that from other companies including Google. Later on in his post, he expands on why Motorola updates usually take longer than Samsung and others, “Motorola is small potatoes on budget compared to Samsung and Apple. Delays are usually due to funding for test verifications on new device software.”
Not too surprising, as we did know that Motorola isn’t as big as Samsung, heck Apple may not be as big as Samsung. But money does talk. So Droid Turbo users will have to continue waiting for their Android 5.1 Lollipop update. For those that are upset at how long it’s taking, remember that these updates aren’t done overnight. And the biggest issue is likely their network along with the gradual move to VoLTE through Advanced Calling 1.0. Hopefully it’s not too much longer, especially since we’ll be seeing Android M next week at Google I/O.
