Here’s some interesting info. According to Reddit user /u/AndroidLeaks, Motorola has been testing three handsets on the Verizon network. All of which are QHD, 2560×1440, and have all been tested in the Chicago area. Which isn’t a surprise considering Motorola’s headquarters are in Chicago. Although, other than the display resolution and the network, nothing else is known, aside from their model numbers. We have the XT1578, XT1585, and XT192A. The second generation Moto X was the XT1095, so the model numbers don’t really help us out too much.
Many are assuming that one is the Moto X (2015), and actually the XT1578 and XT1585 could both be Moto X (2015) variants or prototypes that are being tested. While the XT192A appears to be more of a DROID smartphone, likely a DROID Turbo successor. As that is a QHD display device, and it was actually the first with a display under 5.5-inches to be QHD.
It’s tough to say exactly what smartphones these are, and if they will ever actually be announced is another thing. As there are many prototypes and smartphones that get made and tested and never see the light of day. One thing’s for sure, we likely won’t find out until later this year. As Motorola typically announces the Moto X around September, when IFA takes place. So that would be when I’d expect to see both the Moto X (2015) and the new DROID smartphone announced. Some of the leaked specs for the Moto X (2015) has shown us that the device is going to have a QHD display, as well as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 808 processor and even 4GB of RAM. A more recent leak that came out this week shows that we have a 16MP camera with OIS on the back this time around. Which would be a good thing for Motorola as their cameras are usually pretty bad, actually.
A company typically goes through a number of prototypes before they get to their final version of a smartphone that we see on store shelves, so this could just be a number of prototypes that Motorola is testing. But we should find out more soon.
