Samsung Ships 10 Million Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge Globally

Samsung announced the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge just in March this year and it has been available for purchase only since the 10th of last month including on all four major US carriers. Already, shipments for the two variants have apparently crossed 10 million, according to a “high ranking” Samsung official quoted by Korean news agency Yonhap News. The S6 and the S6 Edge flying off the shelves may not be surprising given the rave reviews the two devices have got ever since their release, with most reviewers heaping high praise on the duo, calling them the best Android phones on the market right now. Samsung has also launched an S6 Edge Iron Man edition and various Avengers themed accessories including cases and chargers, just as they had done with the Galaxy Note 4.

There were reports earlier that Samsung had publicly declared that they believe they could sell as many as 70 million Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge handsets worldwide this year, having seen a relatively lukewarm response to the last generation flagship – the Galaxy S5. However, one thing that does stick out a bit is the time taken for Samsung to achieve the 10 million landmark this time around. Samsung had taken less than a month to ship as many units of their previous generation flagships in each of the two previous years. The Galaxy S5 from last year took 25 days, whereas the Galaxy S4 from 2013 took 27 days to reach the landmark. While Samsung hasn’t officially come out with any figures just as yet, speculation is rife that the landmark may have taken longer this time around – maybe more than 30 days. It’s important to remember here, that the figures in all cases represent shipments to carriers and sales partners and not retail sales to end-consumers. Not all shipments get converted to sales, but most OEMs state their shipment figures, thereby coming out with inflated numbers.

The Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge feature glass backs and aluminum frames. The devices come with 5.1-inch QHD (2560—1440 resolution) AMOLED display panels and are each powered by an Exynos 7420 SoC developed in-house by Samsung. The chipset comes with an octa-core 64-bit CPU and a Mali-T760MP8 GPU. The devices come with 16 megapixel rear cameras with OIS and auto-focus, and can record up to 2160p videos at 30 fps. The 5 megapixel front cameras are also capable of recording high-resolution 1440p videos at 30fps. The batteries are non-replaceable in both the devices, and while the one on the S6 is rated at 2550mAh, the S6 Edge comes with a slightly larger 2600mAh battery.
