DigiHUD Speedometer is a free – as in free of ads, free! – Android app that uses the GPS in your device to approximate how quickly you’re driving. It’s designed as an app that you can use as a glanceable source of info while driving, using an LED-style, easily read display. It can display a compass, your current speed, the time, your maximum speed, a trip meter and more. DigiHUD Speedometer is completely free to use, and there’s even a HUD (heads-up display) view along with a number of settings and speed alerts, too. Is DigiHUD Speedometer the free app you’ve been looking for behind the wheel? Let’s find out.
You’ll need to download DigiHUD Speedometer from the Play Store in order to get started. One thing I appreciated was the warning about screen burn-in, which shows the developer is a responsible one.
This is what the default display looks like with DigiHUD Speedometer:
A few things to point out is that DigiHUD Speedometer automatically cuts the brightness down to reduce battery drain as well as burn-in, but you can change a number of different settings from a neat menu whenever you like.
A key feature for many – which is included for free with DigiHUD Speedometer – is the ability to set a speed alert, letting you know whenever you hit this speed limit with a noise.
To test how accurate DigiHUD Speedometer or whether or not it even worked in the first place, I went for a Sunday drive with my Dad. It definitely works, that’s for sure.
When he hit the highway and were able to test a constant speed, we determined that the “margin of error” so to speak was somewhere in the region of 2 – 5 mph.
One thing that I did notice however, is that the app is a little slow to figure out your speed when pulling out of a junction or something like that.
That’s not a huge deal however, as when you’re driving at a constant, I was surprised at how accurate DigiHUD Speedometer really was, and it’s certainly nothing like the inaccurate apps of its kind from just a few years ago. There’s also a fun HUD mode, which – in my experience – is not good in daylight but should work great at night.
There’s also the option to change the look of the LED style display, too. This makes it a little easier to get everything to match together on your dashboard.
DigiHUD Speedometer is a neat little app, and while I’m certain it’s not for everyone, if you spend a lot of time commuting to and from work or travel for meetings and such, this display can be very helpful. Best mounted to a car stand of course, knowing the time while driving is helpful as it is, but with a fairly accurate representation of how fast you’re driving, and DigiHUD Speedometer quickly becomes a great app to have installed on your smartphone or tablet. The HUD view might not work all that well, but it’s a nice addition in a free app like this. I was surprised by how accurate the app was, and by how much the developer is willing to give you for free, and there are no ads! That alone is worth celebrating for a lot of users. All-in-all, a useful app that can really help shed light on your mileage and driving habits.

- Overall (4/5) – DigiHUD Speedometer is a free app and while you could say it’s limited, to say it costs nothing with no ads, it’s a neat little app that will definitely prove useful over time.
