When Google announced the Google Nexus 6 back in October, many of us wondered about WiFi Calling, as it hadn’t been part of any of the previous Nexus devices. Primarily because it wasn’t a T-Mobile branded device, and only T-Mobile branded devices had WiFi Calling. However, T-Mobile and Google have been working to get WiFi Calling going since October, and it appears that we may get it as soon as this weekend. According to a tweet from Des at T-Mobile “This is shaping up to be a very Happy Memorial day weekend… #Nexus6“. So perhaps we might see WiFi Calling on Android 5.1.1 coming this weekend, we’ll keep our fingers crossed. And as always we’ll let you know once the update is rolling out.
Getting WiFi Calling working on the Nexus 6 would be a huge deal. As it would be the first phone on T-Mobile’s network that is not sold by them to have WiFi Calling. This feature is really popular among T-Mobile users, and that’s because they can take phone calls from anywhere, as long as there is WiFi, which is a big deal, you could actually take a call on a flight, although everyone would hate you, I’m sure.
On May 12th, Des tweeted that a bug was found with WiFi Calling and it would take 7-10 days to fix. Well as of now, it’s been 10 days. So hopefully it can make it through technical approval and get approved by Google and T-Mobile and roll out this weekend. That would be great for Memorial Day Weekend. The update is also supposedly going to bring Android 5.1.1 to the Nexus 6, which we currently are sitting on Android 5.1. The update to Android 5.1.1 isn’t a big one, well unless WiFi Calling is indeed on its way in that update. But for the most part it’s just a bug fixing update.
WiFi Calling would be a great pre-Google I/O present, right? Google I/O is like Christmas for most of us. As Google announces new toys for us to play with and a new version of Android – Android M – is going to be previewed next Thursday in San Francisco, who’s excited?
