Asus launched its ZenFone 2 range of devices earlier this year after experiencing great success with its first generation ZenFones last year. Asus launched multiple variants of the device, with storage starting from 16 GB for the entry-level variant. Reports now indicate, that on Thursday, June 18th, the company is about to launch the most expensive variant in this year’s lineup in the company’s home base of Taiwan. The phone reportedly comes with a massive 128 GB internal storage as its USP, and features 4 GB RAM. The phone is rumored to be priced at the equivalent of $387. It is worth noting however, that Taiwan won’t be the first market where Asus will be launching the 128 GB variant of the ZenFone 2. The company already sells a 128 GB variant of the phone in India for Rs. 29,999 ($475), and by the looks of things, it is that exact device, which is to be launched in Taiwan.
As a refresher, the Asus ZenFone 2 already comes in multiple variants with extremely confusing nomenclature. The top-of-the-line edition (ZE551ML) comes with a 5.5-inch display with a 1080p panel. The device is powered by an Intel Atom Z3580 SoC, which includes a 2.3 GHz quad-core CPU and a PowerVR G6430 GPU. The phone comes with 4 GB of RAM, and has the option of 32, 64 or 128 GB storage. The device comes with a 13 megapixel rear camera, and a 5 megapixel front camera. The phone comes with Android 5.0 Lollipop pre-installed, and has a 3000 mAh battery. Asus has also launched an entry-level variant of the device with a 5.5-inch 720p display and 2 GB of RAM. That particular device comes with the model number ZE550ML and comes with either 16 or 32 GB of storage. The device is also powered by an Intel SoC from the same family (Atom Z3560), but has a slightly under-clocked processor, running at 1.8 GHz. The cameras however, remain unchanged.
It’s worth noting here, that Asus is fixing to launch a bunch of other ZenFones in the coming months, with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips. Those models are expected to be more mid-range, but some of them will come with laser auto-focus, a feature first seen on the LG G3 internationally. The devices were shown off by Asus at the recently held Computex trade fair in Taiwan.
