ASUS officially took the wraps off of their second generation smartwatch earlier this morning, appropriately named the ZenWatch 2, and although ASUS did not mention any pricing information for the new device, they did give out a list of different details on the watch. The Zen Watch 2 will run Android Wear just like the first ZenWatch, and it will come in two different sizes this time around giving consumers a little more choice than they had with the first model. Judging by the promotional announcement video ASUS will also have an entire lineup of interchangeable wrist strap accessories available to give consumers even more customization options.
Quite possibly the most, or at least one of the most interesting details about the ZenWatch 2 could be its battery life, which PC World is reporting to potentially be somewhere around three to four days on a single charge, which is actually quite good compared to just about any other smartwatch out there. If a few days on one charge for the watch isn’t enough, those users who need just a little bit more will have the option of picking up an external battery to give the ZenWatch 2 an additional half days’ battery life, further painting the ZenWatch 2 as having the most battery life of any other Android Wear device. These stats are of course according to ASUS, so exact longevity of the battery will have to wait until it’s released and people have a chance to use it.
The ZenWatch 2 will come equipped with an AMOLED display protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 2.5D, and it charges via a magnetic cable that connects from the backside of the watch casing. This should make for easy connect disconnect from the charger when users are ready to strap it on and go about their day. If the ASUS ZenWatch 2 lives up to ASUS claims for battery life, three to four days is quite a bit, but it will still be a few days behind other less power hungry options like those from Pebble. Nevertheless, those who were intrigued by the original ZenWatch but wanted something which would last a little longer, could have just what they want if the price is right on ASUS’s new model.
