Motorola Is Offering Free Red Leather Backs To Moto X Buyers

The first generation Moto X represented a new start for the company now owned by Lenovo. While it didn’t have the latest and greatest specifications, even at the time it got released, it featured a whole new way of customizing the hardware with more than 2,000 possible combinations when users chose the back of the phone and some metallic accents through Motorola’s new online tool called Moto Maker. It offered different textures and even some options in natural wood and users could choose the wallpaper and the greeting so that the phone was totally personalized right out of the box. It also featured an almost unskinned version of Android, keeping it pretty much like Google intended it, except for some enhancements from the company.

Then, the second generation of the Moto X was announced last year with specs that were more in line with what the flagships from other companies were offering, including a 5.2-inch Full HD AMOLED display, a quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor with 2 GB of RAM and storage options of 16 GB or 32 GB. The main camera has a 13-megapixel sensor with dual LED flash and 4K video recording and a 2-megapixel one in the front. The design features a metallic frame and this time around, the customizations include 27 options for the back part, 17 different colors in polycarbonate, 6 options in leather and 4 different wood options. Accents in the front and back include 10 different color options. Suffice it to say, there is a lot to be had on the customization front.

Users and reviewers have received really well the recent leather options as they offer a pleasant feel thanks to the texture and it looks more premium paired with the metallic accents of the phone. The leather and wood options usually cost $25, but now Motorola is making the Horween Red Leather option a free upgrade if users buy the phone from the Moto Maker and choose the no-contract option in the US. The discount is applied at checkout and the offer is valid through July 7. This means that for $299 users can customize their 16 GB Moto X with the red leather back and choose all of the other options available to make it their own.
