Not all handsets are guaranteed to get updates to the newest versions of Android software, such is the nature of the rapidly evolving smartphone and tablet industry where manufacturers typically release new devices every single year. Google themselves promise updates to their Nexus lineup for at least 18 months, (now changing to a full two years with Android M forward) but that doesn’t necessarily mean the manufacturers will or even have to adhere to those standards. In most cases OEMs will at least promise and usually deliver support for their most popular handsets. In the case of the Motorola Atrix HD launched on AT&T’s network back in 2012, support was dropped and users who were expecting an update to Android 4.4 KitKat never got it. That left device users on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean even though Motorola listed the device as a KitKat compatible handset which would see the fresh coat of paint.
Some two years later and the world of Android is already focused around software two versions higher than KitKat, with Atrix HD owners perhaps feeling a little bit slighted. Motorola wants to correct the problem though which is why they’re offering a special deal on the Moto X Pure Edition to make amends. It’s not exactly a free software update, but if you’re still rocking a Motorola Atrix HD it’s probably time for an upgrade to a new phone anyway, as it is a three-year-old device.
Those who still have and use the Motorola Atrix HD can pick up the Moto X Pure Edition starting at $299, and all that needs to be done is fill out a simple form which Motorola has provided, requiring things like the IMEI of the Atrix HD handset and the phone number (which has to be active on the handset) or the serial number of the device. Motorola has set a couple of limitations for this offer which are worth mentioning. The offer is only valid until June 30th, so if you’re interested you’ll have to set things up before that date. Second is that the offer code which they give you after filling out the form has to be redeemed no later than July 15th, which gives users two weeks to purchase the device if they fill out and submit the form by the last day of June 30th.
