Every year we go through the same old song and dance when it comes to Nexus phones. There’s the anticipation, which never comes true, about a possible launch during Google I/O and then there are the rumors of a device coming in the Fall. It’s pretty much a foregone conclusion that there will be another Nexus smartphone launching this year, especially as Project Fi is getting off the ground, but now the questions and rumors are surrounding who is going to make this Nexus, and whether or not there will be two devices. We’ve heard that both LG and Huawei are working on possible Nexus devices, and while there’s been very little evidence to support either, more details surrounding an LG-made Nexus smartphone have surfaced today.
A report out of South Korea details the supply of 3D camera modules to LG Electronics to be used in an upcoming Nexus device, one that is also described as being “premium”. LG has made two Nexus devices up to now, including the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 and while both of them were great devices, you couldn’t really call either of them premium. The 3D camera module sounds a little crazy, but considering that Google has both experimented with 3D imaging platforms with Project Tango and is pushing for the widespread adoption of Virtual Reality, a camera capable of taking more than just still pictures starts to make sense. After all, the only way for these technologies to take off is to put them in the hands of the masses.
A new Nexus smartphone is coming, that much is clear, but just who is going to be tasked with producing it and whether or not there will be two of them is unclear. We’re halfway through 2015 now, and we’re sure that we’ll hear more as time goes on, but with the changes and polish that Google is putting in to Android M, it’s understandable that they’ll want to show off their latest and greatest with a fresh new Nexus smartphone.
