Motorola’s Moto X turned the company into a new direction, offering fewer devices but adding some features into them that were very well received, like the voice commands. We are now eagerly waiting for the third generation of that smartphone, which according to the leaks, should be unveiled next Tuesday. Since the software is an almost untouched version of the Android operating system, the first-generation Moto X was one of the first ones to be updated to a newer version, although the history wasn’t the same for the Lollipop update.
The most recent update of the OS, known as Android 5.1 has been rolling out to some devices for a while now, including some models of the Moto X. Of course, the more recent models would get the update first, but even as it was ready for the Moto X that was released in 2013, unlocked models would get it before the carrier-locked ones, as the update has to be approved by them. Finally, this month was supposed to be available for AT&T’s first-generation Moto X, but just a couple of days ago, it got suspended without giving any explanation and only mentioning that they were working to fix it as soon as possible. This lead to speculate about what could have gone wrong, perhaps it had something to do with the compatibility of the carrier’s network or maybe it was in the update’s code itself.
Now, Motorola’s David Schuster has explained what the issues were in a message on his official Google+ page. One third of the users of this handset have installed the update and a small percentage of them noticed that some contacts had been lost and they had been experiencing some issues while syncing with AT&T’s Address Book. This could potentially be a big issue, so they would rather not risk the user’s contacts. He mentions that they are working on finding out what causes the issue in order to fix it and he will communicate the progress of the investigation. So while this means that the update will take some more time to reach most devices, it’s better to have it with the least amount of issues.
