Those of you with the original Moto X on AT&T won’t be seeing the Android 5.1 update as soon as you had hoped. It appears that AT&T and Motorola have pulled the update. This is according to AT&T’s support page for the Moto X 2013. That the update to Android 5.1 Lollipop has been suspended, for now.
According to AT&T’s Support page:
“Effective July 20, 2015, the Android 5.1 (Lollipop) software update for the Moto X (XT1058) has been temporarily suspended. We apologize for any inconvenience and are working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible.”
The update was slated to go out starting July 7th, but it appears that after the soak test was done, it was pulled to fix some issues. We have no word on what issues there were, but obviously they were big enough to pull the update and fix them.
This is a bit puzzling. Seeing as Android 5.1 has already landed on most of the Moto X 2013 variants without having any issues. So perhaps the carrier is having issues trying to deliver the update to all those Moto X 2013’s on their network? This update would bring the Moto X 2013 from Android 4.4.4 all the way to Android 5.1. It is also a pretty large update, weighing in just over 700MB in size. The update includes all kinds of new features found in Lollipop, like Smart Lock, Material Design and others. The build for this update was supposed to be 222.26.1.ghost_att.ATT.en.US, so when the update does finally start rolling out, it’ll be interesting to see if that build number changes. If it does, then we know there was a bug that caused the update to be pulled. If not, then it was likely an issue on AT&T’s end. Either way, we’re hoping it’ll be available to everyone real soon.
With the Moto X 2015 about to be announced next week, many with the original Moto X may be looking at upgrading. And having this update pulled may not be good for Motorola to keep their customers. Although it might be a little to early to tell for sure. Motorola is holding an event in New York on July 28th to announce a few new products, we’re hoping the new Moto X is one of those.
