OnePlus is a Chinese company who intended to create what they called a “flagship killer”, what they meant was that their phone would had every feature from competing flagship devices from other companies, but keeping the cost relatively low. The phone was finally unveiled in April 2014 and in general, consumers seemed interested in the product because of the hardware features offered by it and the software which was made by Cyanogen, creators of one of the most famous Android ROMs. The hardware had a nice enough design and the build quality was solid, even including some magnesium elements, but some manufacturers were already creating their flagship smartphones with better materials like glass or metal. Still it was a very good device for the $299 or $349 price (depending on the internal storage) that the company was asking back then.
What really affected the sales of the OnePlus One though, was the way it was sold. It started by selling the device only to those users that had an invitation and those invitations were sent by the company to those who won one of their contests. They were supposed to be a variety of interchangeable back covers of different colors and materials, but most of them were never released. This device was discontinued last April, but the company has generated enough interest to consumers so that they eagerly expect a second version of the device.
This second generation has been teased by the company and some features have been mentioned like the fingerprint scanner, that is becoming a standard for flagship devices this year, plus it will include 4 GB of RAM, which is adequate for the time it will be released and even a Type-C connector while keeping its cost at around $450. There have been some leaked images that supposedly depict this device and now there are some images of some cases for the OnePlus 2. The first case is made by Orzly and it is made from polycarbonate, and even though some of the text refer to it as belonging to the Nexus 6, the design doesn’t match that phone. It will be available from August 27 and has a large cutout on the back for the module that will integrate the camera and the fingerprint scanner, so it doesn’t match the metal render that was leaked a little while ago. The other cover features a flip wallet design which supposedly shows the front of the device, but it looks closer to the previous generation.
