HTC has endured a turbulent time over the recent year but that has not stopped their intention to be innovative or bring to market new devices and now the tech giant is apparently looking for partnerships to help promote and use their latest device, the HTC Vive, at the Taipei Game Developer Forum.
The HTC Vive was unveiled during Mobile World Congress on March 1st, 2015 after months of rumors and speculation. The virtual reality headset was an instant hit with those that were lucky enough to be able to test the device. Sporting a refresh rate of 90 Hz, dual 1080 x 1200 screens (one for each eye) and over 70 different sensors, the HTC Vive packs quite some hardware in a relatively small frame. For those waiting on the device, HTC has yet to release an official date as to when the HTC Vive will be available to consumers. Although, they did state that it should be ready for the 2015 holiday season. This would put the release date somewhere around November to December, with maybe an unveiling sometime in October.
Regardless of when it ships, developers can go ahead and start making games for the device now. HTC has already released a developer’s edition along with their OpenVR SDK which will give game developers all the tools that they would need to begin making awesome games for the HTC Vive. While there is no information as to how many gaming companies have already jumped on board with the HTC Vive, it can be argued that the list may be lower than HTC would have liked, as they are hoping to attract more potential partners during the TGDk conference.
Virtual reality has quickly become the latest tech trend, though for HTC’s sake, it would bode badly for them if the technology quickly dissipates like the 3-D trends of years past. Nonetheless, HTC needs to continue to innovate to stay relevant and the HTC Vive might be just the thing to propel them forward. In the meantime, HTC still needs to find a lot of investors and partners to make the HTC Vive a successful reality. A gaming console is ever only as good as the games that it carries. Here’s hoping that the once formidable mobile giant has better luck with gaming accessories than they did with the HTC One M9.
