During today’s smartphone-centric event, Motorola had three new devices to show off. Among all of that was a little confusion with the Moto X Play not being announced for the US market and the Moto X Style now apparently being called the Moto X Pure in the US. Still, cutting through all of the noise was the Moto G, back better than ever, and available right now. The Moto G for 2015 builds on the larger 5.0-inch version of the device from last year, but adds a couple of compelling, new features. Under-the-hood, the new Moto G is powered by a 64-bit Snapdragon 410 and for those that need it, there’s now a 2GB version available. It’s also water-resistant.
There’s often a lot of confusion over whether devices are “waterproof” or “water-resistant” and what exactly is the difference. Well, waterproofing suggests that the device is up to the task of beating water, but as Doctor Who fans will tell you, water always wins. As such, a device that is “water-resistant” can resist water for a small amount of time and shrug off spills and splashes. The new Moto G has an industry-standard rating of IPX7, which is actually pretty decent as far as water-resistance goes these days, especially for a device that starts at $179.99. Motorola have uploaded a handful of videos (found below) that easily explain just how water-resistant the Moto G is.
These are your standard, 30-second ad spots here, but they do one important, and very Moto thing; they explain things easily. With these videos, there should be little confusion over how water-resistant the new Moto G really is. Something people might not know is that the Moto G and Moto X from last year were somewhat water-repellant, and could happily survive spills, but would succumb to submersion. This year, it’s official, and the Moto G can be submerged for a short, short amount of time and has the industry standard stamp of approval to back it up. It might not stand up to the water-resistance in Sony’s high-end Xperia Z smartphones, but then the Moto G retails for a fraction of the cost.
