It’s no secret that companies are always trying to innovate and bring out something new and fresh to the market. LG may have something in the works that is rumored and speculated to be innovative for the Apple iPhone lineup in the coming years. We’ve seen LG bring out devices before with a curved and flexible display such as the LG G Flex and LG G Flex 2, so it wouldn’t come to much of a surprise if the company invested additional time and effort into building and producing more of these flexible displays. However, it’s a bit of an oddity on LG investing nearly $1 billion with a sixth generation flexible OLED display.
The announcement of LG investment towards their sixth generation of the flexible OLED displays comes from a press release. Within the official press release, LG unveils work on a new production line for the displays which will be located within the Gumi Plant of Gyeongbuk Province, Korea. Production is said to begin in the first half of 2017, which would line up rather well with the rumor and speculation of Apple releasing a flexible iPhone display.
Rumors have been surrounding Apple that suggest the company is looking to explore a more flexible style OLED screen panel when it comes to their Apple iPhone lineup. Furthermore, Apple has filed for a patent in the past for a curved phone display and to top it off, LG is one of the manufacturers that supplies screen displays to Apple. If Apple really is looking more into developing a future iPhone model with a heavy focus towards the curved display, LG would likely be their supplier source.
Again, this is all speculation as of right now with neither Apple nor LG stating just what these new flexible OLED display will be used for. While it’s plausible LG spent nearly $1 billion just for the production in their sixth generation flexible OLED displays, it seems unlikely with the various products and devices they manufacturer at this point. Either way, we won’t know any more until the production starts in 2017 or the first few device announcements are revealed the following year.
