CMe is an Android app that aims to make social media a little more social, rather than about the media part of things. CMe is about inviting your friends to connect with you using a messaging application like WhatsApp, with the ability to share images and files as well as suggest places near you for you and your friends to check out. Users can also use the Google Maps and Yell integration to search for places, too. The app features “CMe’s” which are calendar events in a way, these are designed to make it nice and easy to plan events and invite your friends and groups to the app. CMe features neat and easy integration with Facebook allowing you to import contacts as well as invite friends.
Getting started with CMe is fairly easy, you need to download it from the Play Store and then either sign up for an account or join with your Facebook account.
Once you’ve signed up, you’ll be asked to fill in a short form about yourself.
The main view of CMe is of your Friends list. You’ll note that there’s a ‘Stella’ listed below, this kind and helfpul ‘bot can introduce you to some of the features CMe has to offer. As you can see their statuses are displayed under their name and you can start a chat with them whenever you like.
With CMe, you can create a group to keep certain friends all together, so for me and my friends I might create a group for my gaming friends so we can talk about new games and meet ups without bugging anyone else.
In a group chat, you can share all sorts of different media to share in a comment interest.
What sets CMe apart from the rest is the ability to suggest places to eat or places to go with a group, this is how CMe becomes “more social, less social media” as it encourages people to agree and meet IRL.
Now, you can do this sort of thing with Facebook, but any Facebook event ever has turned into a massive long list of invited people that not everyone wants to spend time with. Plus, these events are fixed, and quite rigid. With CMe you can suggest more than one place and have the group choose. Agreeing on a place with CMe is nice and easy, as users can view them all in one group, as well as see it on the map with Yelp information included.
With CMe, you can quickly and easy plan a meetup on the hoof, or for something more important. CMe is more about connecting people together that are already closer, rather than just sharing another funny video with the rest of the world, and for a lot of people, this will be refreshing. I’m not a particularly big fan of Facebook as, at least for me, it has become too local with people I don’t have too much in common. For me, CMe offers me a way to connect better with a group of friends nearby to suggest places to go and have fun without having to deal with any of the drama of Facebook. Plus, the messaging app works great, and being able to look at Google Maps while using the app is a great of way of planning ahead and making sure that everything is as it should be.
Ratings
- Speed (4/5) – CMe runs fine, but it could be a little quicker in spots, we suppose.
- Features (4/5) – It might not be for everyone, but for those that want to cut through the noise of Facebook and connect better with a select crew of people, CMe works wonders.
- Theme (4/5) – Everything looks good here, and the font is quite good-looking as well.
- Overall (4/5) – A solid app that offers users yet another decent alternative to Facebook, CMe is well worth checking out.
Pros
- Easy to get setup and integrates with Facebook to get friends using the app quickly.
- Free to use service that offers friends and family a more intimate and hassle free way to connect.
- Uses Google Maps and info from Yelp to make things nice and simple when finding places to eat or meet.
- Group chat offers a lot of attachment features and more.
Cons
- Might prove difficult to get all of your friends and family to use another app like this.
- Doesn’t offer a huge range of features outside of the CMe’s and event suggestions.
CMe is something that I can see those uninspired by the likes of Facebook and Twitter really enjoying. It’s a way of organizing events as well as staying close to a group of friends without the drama or hassle of other networks. Suggesting events is simple and when used in a group can really help you get out of a rut of doing the same sort of thing all the time. Well worth taking a look at, CMe is free and worth a go.
