Over the last week or so Verizon Wireless had announced they would be making some rather major changes to their plan lineup. The most notable of these changes is that they would be completely doing away with contracts in a sense, as you’ll be allowed to resign a new contract if you’re already on that type of plan and really want to keep it. If you’ll be signing up to Verizon on a new activation after today when the new “Verizon Plan” goes live, you’ll be on a non-contract plan which is offered in four different sizes, which are S, M, L, and XL. Those sizes refer to the amount of data one gets with their plan every single month, while unlimited voice minutes and unlimited messaging are included with all options.
Now that these plans are live there is one question which is now seemingly getting an answer which apparently didn’t have one before, and it pertains to those who are on Verizon’s Unlimited Plans. Will Unlimited subscribers get the option to upgrade to new phones with a discount? The answer is apparently no, as the FAQ section about this particular question on Verizon’s website states that “No, you’re not required to switch to The Verizon Plan when you get a new device; however, you’ll only have the option to keep unlimited data if you pay the retail price for your new device. When you upgrade to a phone at a discounted price, you have the option to choose from either a voice plan with a standalone data package or The Verizon Plan.”
This means that for those who want to keep the Unlimited plans they may still be currently on, they can do so, but must pay full price for the phone they want to upgrade to. For anyone who is wanting to switch to a new plan, I.E. the new Verizon Plan in any size whether it be S, M, L, or XL, will get the option to break up the cost of the phone in monthly payments with their phone bill. This might be a little bit of a letdown for those who are Unlimited users as Samsung’s latest devices, the Galaxy S6 Edge+ and the Galaxy Note 5 were both announced today and will be available starting August 21st, with pre-orders having started today at 3PM EDT. Unlimited is great, but you may want to reevaluate whether or not you really need it if it means no discounts.
