Back when it was all but confirmed LG were making the Nexus 4, the Android community had seemingly decided that LG would have done a bad job. The Nexus 4 went on to become a sleepy success for both LG and Google, so much so that they returned with the massively popular Nexus 5 in 2013. After a year off, LG is back in the Nexus workshop, creating a fresh twist on the Nexus 5 that so many loved. Rather than the more extravagant Huawei Nexus 6P, LG’s Nexus 5X is a more affordable, smaller device. A 5.2-inch display is here, rather than the much larger one inside Huawei’s goliath, and there’s a less angular, more soft and rounder appeal here.
If what’s on the inside is really what you’re after, then we have you covered here, but we managed to spend a little time with the new hardware during Google’s event in San Francisco. We got to spend time with the Ice Blue Nexus 5X, as well as the more pedestrian Quartz White and Carbon Black editions. Any of these three feel good in the hand and fans of the original Nexus 5 will feel nostalgic and at home with this hardware. Starting at $379.99, it’s obviously not quite as nice as the Huawei’s Nexus this year, but it feels good in the hand. It might be plastic, but it’s got a nice soft-touch back just as its original did and the more rounded corners fit nicely in the hand, and suit Material Design down to the ground. The camera protrudes quite a bit here, but that’s probably down to it being one of the largest sensors that Google has put into a Nexus of this size. The fingerprint sensor meanwhile, which is used for Nexus Imprint, is located just underneath and is easily reached.
