Samsung is one of the biggest tech companies in the world. This Korea-based smartphone OEM manufactures mobile SoC, displays, flash storage, RAM, camera sensors, etc. In other words, Samsung dabbles in pretty much anything. Either way, the company has announced their 12Gb (Gigabit) LPDDR4 DRAM memory earlier this month. These chips will be available in the coming months, and are the first of a kind out in the market. We’re here to provide more details about these chips, so read on if you’re interested.
Please keep in mind that these are 12Gb (Gigabit) chips we’re talking about here, which means we’re actually talking about 6GB RAM units. These RAM chips will consume less power than regular chips, and are based on a 20nm manufacturing technology. The 12Gb LPDDR4 RAM provides the largest capacity and speed available out there, as far as DRAM chips are concerned. Now, if we compare these chips to the 20nm-based 8Gb LPDDR4 chips, you’ll see why is Samsung trying to hype up their new product.
The 12Gb LPDDR4 units are more than 30% faster (4,266Mbps) compared to 8Gb LPDDR4 chips, and twice as fast as DDR4 DRAM chips for PCs. The new LPDDR4 RAM also consumes 20% less energy, and Samsung also mentioned that they’ve raised manufacturing productivity for these chips for over 50% in order to meet the demand. Samsung’s new 12Gb LPDDR4 enables 3 or 6GB of mobile DRAM in one package, using just two chips or four chips, respectively. Interesting enough, Samsung’s new 6GB RAM package can be fit into the same space used for the 3GB of LPDDR4 RAM which we’re seeing used these days. These are great news considering OEMs will be able to make devices more powerful without having to ruin the phone’s design and make them bigger.
That’s more or less it as far as Samsung’s 8Gb LPDDR4 chips go. These units will be available in the coming months, quite probably Q1 2016. It is quite probable that Samsung’s Galaxy S7 flagship will be the first smartphone to use the company’s new chips, as it’s usually the case. Either way, if any additional news surface, we’ll make sure to let you know.
