Skype is Microsoft’s messaging solution that includes several ways of communicating, all of them based on the internet, such as video calls, instant messages and even calls to any phone number for a low cost. The service is compatible with almost every platform including mobile operating systems, there’s also an app for desktop systems and more recently, it became available from any browser as a web interface. The mobile app has seen many changes throughout these years, they’ve added many features and it has also changed the way it looks. Recently, the Android version got updated to the version 5.10, bringing custom ringtones, sharing photos is now easier and it is possible to forward them, among other improvements.
Now, the app is getting updated to version 6.0 and the update brings with it lots of changes. First of all, it’s designed specifically for Android, so it follows the Material Design guidelines that were introduced with Android 5.0 (Lollipop), making it look simpler and more elegant. The new tabs are better integrated with the rest of the OS and the menu is now at the left of the screen. There’s a new Floating Icon on the bottom right corner as in many Android apps. By pressing this button, a bunch of options will appear, so users will be able to start a new conversation in the many ways it is offered, whether it is by video call, audio call, text-based chat or video message.
Search functionality has also been improved, so now users will be able to find contacts and their conversations faster and easier than before, as it now lives in just one window and the icon can be easily found at the top right corner. Another improved functionality is that users will be able to see how many messages are still unread, so they can have more control over what they have read and what they haven’t. The update can be downloaded from the Google Play Store just like any other app and the updated version is available starting from today. If you already have the app installed, the chances are you will see the update hit your device soon enough.
