When Samsung announced its new Samsung Pay and where it would be available, Canada was conspicuously absence from the list. Canadians watched it start in South Korea and then it moved to the US on September 28…but still no Canada. Based on a couple of job descriptions posted by Samsung Canada, it appears that Samsung Pay may indeed find its way into Canada.
“Samsung is making big steps into enterprise mobility with a wide range of device and SW solutions. With the recent launch of Samsung KNOX™ and Samsung Pay, we are now looking for experienced and talented individuals for our Vancouver lab to design, develop, operate and support these new solutions in the global market.” It further goes one to say, “The Enterprise Services Platform & Infrastructure business unit is looking for a Lead Dev/Ops Engineer who is eager to work with on leading edge, global projects built on top of Amazon AWS and MS Azure building the global cloud infrastructure for Samsung Pay. As you’d expect, the latest technologies are used, and you’ll have the opportunity to work on projects that operate on a truly global scale. We are looking for someone who lives and breathes “Infrastructure as code” and if it needs to be done twice, automate.”
Obviously, Samsung Pay job postings for jobs in Vancouver do not necessarily translate to Samsung Pay coming to Canada. Samsung has employees all around the world that work on projects going on in other countries, not to mention that engineers in Canada are generally paid less than in the US – it may just be good business practices to save Samsung money. At the very least it means more professional jobs for Canadians and a growing presence of Samsung in Canada.
Mobile payments are on the rise, especially since Apple Pay came out. Now with Samsung Pay and Android Pay, analysts predict a rapid growth in mobile payments over the next couple of years. Apple Pay requires the retailer to purchase a special reader and Android Pay uses NFC and can be used at most retailers that have a ‘tap and go’ card reader. What is so nice about Samsung Pay is that it use both NFC and Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) – courtesy of Samsung’s LoopPay purchase – and this allows Samsung Pay to be used at retailers that have the ‘tap and go’ or where they swipe your card. This means that you will be able to use Samsung Pay just about anywhere – let’s hope that it arrives in Canada in the near future.
