If you missed the news today, Motorola and Verizon took to the stage to unveil both the DROID Turbo 2 and DROID MAXX 2. There is little doubting that of the two devices, the DROID Turbo 2 is the one which would be considered to be the more ‘premium’. After all, the DROID MAXX 2 in all reality, does seem to be the Moto X Play, but for the U.S. As such, many will be looking to the DROID Turbo 2 to see how it can compete with the other ‘premium’ devices that are already available. Well, one of those who have already started making such a comparison is DxOMark. Many will already be familiar with DxOMark as they do routinely release their results for camera comparisons. Something which they have already now done today for the DROID Turbo 2, in spite of the device only just being announced.
In terms of the results, DxOMark firmly placed the DROID Turbo in joint-3rd place overall for camera performance. Which is not bad considering the devices which ‘beat’ it are the Sony Xperia Z5, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and the Google Nexus 6P (which it ties with). The overall score awarded to the DROID Turbo 2 was 84, which is the same score they awarded to the Nexus 6P. Therefore, the DROID Turbo 2 is essentially in joint-third position, overall. However, for pure photography marks, the DROID Turbo 2 only scores 84 while the Nexus 6P did score a higher 86 along with the LG G4. What did place the DROID Turbo 2 so highly though is video capturing. On this point, DxOMark awarded the DROID Turbo 2 with another 84, which places it in second position for video and tied with the Galaxy S6 Edge (behind the Sony Xperia Z5).
Interestingly, the score only does place the Turbo 2 one point better than the previously released Moto X Style (Pure in the U.S.), which does sort of make sense, as for the most part they are essentially the same camera. However, according to the details, the point in favor of the DROID Turbo 2 was awarded thanks to the improvements in temporal noise reduction for low light conditions.
