When it comes to mobile calendars, one of the most popular options is the Sunrise Calendar. The app has routinely topped Calendar app lists and for good reason, as it offers its users a nice and feature rich calendar. As a result when the news came through that the team and tech behind Sunrise was being picked up by the mighty Microsoft, many wondered what would become of the Sunrise app, would it remain in its current form or be absorbed by Microsoft into one of their apps and services.
Well, at first it did seem as though the app would continue as it is, as almost immediately after the purchase reports began to emerge, the app did begin to receive quite the noticeable update. However, since then, things have become quiet on the Sunrise front and it is now becoming clear as to why. The Sunrise app, features and services are being absorbed by a Microsoft app, namely, Outlook.
The Sunrise team has announced in a blog post this morning that over the last few months they have been working hard to integrate the features and services associated with Sunrise into the Outlook for Android app and as such, those who prefer the Sunrise experience, should presumably be able to get a like one from the Outlook app. However, the blog post also comes with the information that they will no longer be supporting the Sunrise app going forward. According to the announcement, “As the entire team is completely focused on the Outlook for iOS and Android apps, we won’t be updating the Sunrise apps anymore“. Although the team does state that it is hard to let the Sunrise app go, they do reiterate that the features and services can now be seen in the new Outlook app and they are excited on where the future will take the app. This will be good news for those who already use the Outlook email app, as it does seem it will be gaining a notable amount of features and services going forward.
