Motorola recently announced a very interesting device, not because of its internal specs, but rather because of the technology that makes it the first phone with a shatterproof screen. It’s called the DROID Turbo 2 and it certainly addresses the problem that materials used to build current smartphones are quite fragile. So much so, that a simple fall from the pocket or chest-height could damage the screens as well as other components. The company is showcasing their phones in their brand new store in Chicago, where consumers can experience the durability of the DROID Turbo 2 by throwing it on different surfaces.
Of course, there are some users that like to take such things to the extreme and completely destroy devices on video to test their durability. But this time, a drop test occurred in front of a live audience in Times Square during the ABC show, Good Morning America. They dedicated a similar segment an hour earlier to test some waterproof cases and the results were quite positive. So now, it was time to drop the DROID Turbo 2 from a 5 feet height as Motorola guarantees that their ShatterShield technology would protect the device from such a height. The phone falls on its screen and incurs no damage or shattering. Then, they raised the height of the drop to 10 feet, which is no longer guaranteed by Motorola, and even when the phone falls on its screen, it still does not break or shatter.
There was a Motorola representative, who stated that they put the phone through some extreme tests and explained a little bit about the five layers that make the phone shatterproof and how they used a flexible display instead of glass in order to achieve this. As a reminder for what else is on offer with the DROID Turbo 2, the screen measures 5.4-inches and sports a QHD resolution, it is powered by the Snapdragon 810 processor and 3 GB of RAM. The main camera has a 21-megapixel sensor with phase detection autofocus and a dual-tone LED flash. The 5-megapixel camera on the front also includes an LED flash. There are 32 GB or 64 GB of internal storage, but either way, it can be expanded with a microSD card. The phone runs on Android 5.1.1 and it’s sold exclusively by Verizon, although there’s an international version called Moto X Force. You can check out the video for yourself by hitting play below.
