Samsung’s Exynos 7420 14nm 64-bit octa-core processor is regarded as one of the best mobile processors this year, if not the best. Samsung has used this SoC in four of its devices thus far, three Galaxy S6 devices and the Galaxy Note 5. This SoC has also been utilized by Meizu, a Chinese smartphone manufacturer which has used this chip in the PRO 5 flagship which was announced a while back.
That being said, Samsung has announced the Exynos 8890 processor last month, a direct successor to the Exynos 7420. This chip will almost certainly going to fuel the upcoming Galaxy S7 devices. Well, another variant of the chip has been rumored recently, the Exynos 8870, which is essentially the same as the 8890, but it features a lower clock speed. Now, rumors have been saying that Samsung will use the Exynos 8890, and the Exynos 8870 will be available to other OEMs, like Meizu for example. A leak surfaced yesterday saying that the upcoming PRO 6 handset (if Meizu ends up calling it that), will be powered by this SoC, and today’s rumor mentions yet another China-based company in this context, read on.
This new rumor comes from Weibo, and claims that Lenovo’s upcoming flagship will be fueled by the Exynos 8870 SoC as well. The source doesn’t exactly give us any specific details regarding this smartphone, nor whether it might launch, but don’t expect to see it in the first quarter, that’s for sure. If the phone arrives it will be in the second quarter, or even second half of 2016. Meizu PRO 6 isn’t scheduled for release yet, but considering when the PRO 5 launched, it is possible that we won’t see this device until Q4 2016. ON the other hand, Meizu might opt to shift their release schedule, as they did before, or they might announce a ‘Mini’ variant of the PRO 5, or even PRO 6 handset which will sport this chip. Either way, we’ll have to wait and see what happens in both Lenovo’s and Meizu’s case. We’ll also keep an eye out for any additional Exynos 8870 details, more manufacturers will probably join the likes of Lenovo and Meizu.
