There have been many stories about Android 6.0 Marshmallow updates popping up in Canada and today is no exception. What is nice about this recent announce is that it comes directly from HTC’s Twitter account. Yesterday we heard from Telus that the HTC One M8 and One M9 would receive their Marshmallow upgrade on January 18, and now we have a Tweet from HTC’s Vice President of Product Management confirming that news – “Great news for our Sasktel, Rogers, Wind and Videotron HTC One M9 owners! We’ll go live on Monday for the Marshmallow OS update. Thank you!” When Mo talks, people listen, as he has rarely steered us wrong with his date announcements. Many of you on Bell might be wondering about your update and we have the answer below in a follow up Tweet and answer from Mo – “In lab, should be done soon.” Maybe you will get your Marshmallow by the end of next week.
It is only natural that device manufacturers want to update their smartphones as soon as humanly possible with the latest software, but many factors can cause delays. The HTC One M9 was to see its upgrade before the holidays, but HTC found some bugs so it had to be delayed. Smartphone users would rather have an older version that works than a new version full of bugs…and when you think about it, as complicated as the software that runs a smartphone is, there have been very few upgrades with major problems that brick your device. There were many carriers showing the HTC One M8 and M9 updates as “Coming Soon” just the other day, so a Monday release seems like a true possibility.
The HTC One M8 and One M9 were announced March 2104 and 2015, respectively. They about the same physical size and both have a 5-inch Full HD Super LCD3 display with 441 pixels-per-inch (PPI). The M8 came with the venerable Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor and the M9 came with the troublesome Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor that experienced some overheating issues. The RAM increased from 2GB to 3GB and internal storage was 32GB with a microSD card slot for expansion. HTC made major changes in their camera on the One M9 – the One M8 had dual 4MP UltraPixel sensors with one taking the picture and the second for adding depth to your shot and with the One M9 they put a more conventional 20MP main camera and used one of the 4MP UltraPixel units for the front-facing camera (FFC). The non-removable battery was increased slightly from 2600 mAh to 2840mAh and both offered Quick Charge 1.0. While the all-metal body is a nice touch, many felt there was not enough change between the two models and sales were not what HTC was hoping. The HTC One is a solid device and Marshmallow can only make it better.
