Meizu To Lay Off Up To 5% Of Employees Soon

Meizu is one of the fastest-growing smartphone manufacturers in the world, if not the first on that list. This China-based company has managed to sell 20 million smartphones in 2015, while they sold ‘only’ 4.4 million a year before. Meizu keeps on increasing their sales and profit, and there’s a good reason for that. This company makes really appealing handsets which don’t really cost all that much, and yet they do offer quality and performance.

That being said, we’ve stumbled upon some unexpected news recently, it seems like Meizu will layoff staff soon. According to the source, Meizu’s president, Bai Yongxiang, has said that he’s aware that firing staff is not the solution, but that they’re trying to build an excellent team in order to provide better products and services to their consumers. He has also said that the company won’t fire more than 5% of their employees, and has said that Meizu thanks them for their hard work and that the company will offer them compensations. Meizu still did not share any details regarding this, so we don’t know which department within the company will get smaller soon, but the announcement is expected to happen soon.

Now, this sure is an unexpected move by Meizu, and we’ll see what comes out of it. Meizu actually intends to increase their shipments to an extent this year, but nowhere near what we’ve seen thus far. Meizu set their goal to 25 million devices in 2016, which is ‘only’ 5 million more than what they shipped last year. The company has also said that they’ll control sales of their devices closely. One would expect that Meizu will set a higher goal for themselves in 2016, but they will carefully step forward, which is probably a very smart approach. The smartphone market in China is winding down, and that has already started to reflect on some companies. 2016 will surely be an interesting year in the smartphone world, especially in China, the competition is fierce, and there’s not much room for error. That’s pretty much it, let’s see what Meizu has to offer this year, and if they can build upon their success in 2015.
