It was reported yesterday that Samsung plans to introduce some new devices in India today. The report mentioned Gear S2 smartwatch, and the Gear VR virtual reality headset. Well, both of these devices have just been announced by the company, Samsung has not only introduced the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic smartwatches, but the Gear VR headset as well. We’ve already reported on the Gear S2 and S2 Classic announcements, let’s focus on the Gear VR, shall we.
The Gear VR virtual reality headset was introduced at the end of 2014 (though new variants have been rolled out after that), and hasn’t been available in India until now. The Gear VR is compatible with the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 Edge+, Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge handsets. If you own any other device, this headset won’t do you any good. That being said, this Gear VR headset is somewhat different than the previous variants, it is actually 22% lighter than the Gear VR Innovator Edition, and it offers an improved touchpad which should make it easier for you to access various content. The device also comes with a new foam cushioning, says Samsung, and the device should be more comfortable to wear because of it.
The Samsung Gear VR has a 96-degree field of view, and 54 ~ 70 mm IPD coverage (fixed lenses). The device measures 201.9 x 116.4 x 92.6, while it weighs 310 grams. As far as sensors go, this is the full list of available ones: Accelerometer, Gyrometer, Proximity (mount / unmount detection). Keep in mind that this device connects to one of the aforementioned devices through a micro USB port.
Now, the Samsung Gear VR comes in Front White color only, and costs Rs. 8,200 in India. The device will, much like the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic, going to be available exclusively via Flipkart, at least as far as online availability goes. The device will also going to be available for purchase from a number of offline stores throughout the country, like Croma and Reliance Digital. That’s pretty much it, stay tuned for additional info, if any additional details surface, we’ll let you know.
