As mobile devices have been getting more compact, they seem to be more prone to accidents. Manufacturers of such devices have been increasing the durability of some of their products by building them under certifications that ensure some degree of resistance to water, dust or even falls. Motorola has even built a smartphone with an extremely durable screen which seems to be shatterproof. Still, there are some situations that are way out of our control, like when a device gets stolen, and while manufacturers offer warranties for limited periods, if anything happens to the mobile device after it expires, the device might require a costly repair.
Some companies offer insurance to help you in most situations and typically this kind of protection is offered when users get a new phone and signing up for a new contract. Now, Verizon is giving users who didn’t choose such a service at that time, a second chance to get a protection plan for their devices. Users who activated or upgraded a new device in the past two years who didn’t choose to protect their devices within the first 30 days might be eligible to enroll on Verizon’s Wireless Extended Warranty, Asurion Wireless Phone Protection or Total Equipment Coverage between January 11 and March 10.
Verizon Wireless Extended Warranty will get users a free replacement device for mechanical or electrical defects after the manufacturer’s warranty expires, it costs $3 per month. Asurion Wireless Phone Protection is a more comprehensive solution, as the device is covered against loss, theft, or accidental damage (including water damage), this costs $7.15 per month for smartphones or $5 for tablets or basic phones. The Total Equipment Coverage combines both protection plans and offers coverage against loss, theft, accidental damage and other defects after the manufacturer’s warranty expires, it costs $9 for smartphones and $7 for basic devices or tablets. If the devices get lost, stolen or damaged, there’s a deductible fee, $49 for basic phones, from $49 to $199 for tablets (depending on model) and from $99 to $149 for smartphones. Users can claim a maximum of two devices in 12 months and they can cancel the insurance at any time, getting a pro-rated refund for the monthly fee.
