As expected from any new generation of smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge introduced yesterday at MWC 2016 boast a lot of brand new features that differentiate them from their predecessors. However, if history is any indication, some of the new software additions flaunted by the new Galaxy S7 lineup might eventually be implemented on older or ongoing Galaxy S models through future software updates, but not all of them will make the cut. According to a new report, one of the features that will remain exclusive to the Samsung Galaxy S7 & Galaxy S7 Edge will be the always-on display.
Much like LG did with the latest LG G5, this year Samsung has decided to introduce the always-on display feature to its latest flagships. Now, despite the feature’s name, an always-on display can actually contribute to improved battery life, as it can show information on certain parts of the screen only, without forcing the user to wake up the smartphone (and thus the entirety of the screen’s surface). These bits of information can always be shown or they can be displayed at will through gestures.
Unfortunately, according to a new report from SamMobile, this particular feature will not be introduced on the ongoing Samsung Galaxy S lineup or any other flagships launched last year. Reportedly the always-on display feature will remain exclusive to the latest Galaxy S7 & Galaxy S7 Edge, and will presumably make its way on future devices such as the next Samsung Galaxy Note. No explanations have been given in regards to why the always-on display will not be released on older devices, but hardware limitations related to display technology should not be an issue. Both the 2015 and 2016 Galaxy S series are equipped with Super AMOLED panels which can actually turn off individual OLED pixels in order to achieve deep blacks.
In any case, Samsung enthusiasts looking forward to always-on technology seem to be stuck with only one option, and that is purchasing either one of the two upcoming Galaxy S7 variants. For those interested, pre-orders will commence tomorrow on the 23rd of February, and Samsung expects both the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge to hit the shelves on March 11.
