After Fox Digital revealed that it has partnered with the German developer Wooga to make a Futurama mobile game back in November, the said title finally made its way to Google Play Store earlier this week. The name of this latest portable creation is Futurama: Game of Drones, which, as you may have guessed is a tongue-in-cheek reference to the popular fantasy TV series based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy saga A Song of Ice and Fire. However, apart from a few other humorous references, the premise of the game doesn’t have a whole lot other to do with the said explicit fantasy drama, as the goal of the game is to help the fictional Planet Express company to make deliveries.
Regarding gameplay, Game of Drones is a traditional match-4 puzzler which tasks its players with… well, matching four identical symbols, i.e. deliveries on their phone screen. As is common in this omnipresent mobile genre, matching more than four symbols will yield bigger and better results which in this case come in the form of a special delivery drone which will help boost your final score. Naturally, it’s packed with all of the great Futurama humor that’s been entertaining us since the turn of the century, so fans of the animated series will surely find a lot to love here, especially since the creators of the show Matt Groening and David X. Cohen were directly involved in the game’s development, not to mention one of the Futurama most senior writers Patric M. Verrone penning the script for the game. Apart from a lot of fan service, Game of Drones is also a pretty fun mobile title even though it doesn’t bring a whole lot to the table in terms of gameplay innovation. However, despite not being revolutionary, it’s challenging, well-produced, and funny, which is pretty much all you can ask for from a free-to-play mobile game these days.
As for its business model, it’s pretty fair and doesn’t come packed with any unpleasant surprises. Sure, it doesn’t feature the most unobtrusive monetization strategies ever, but it’s still more than alright in the context of the match-3/4 genre. You can play a fail a fair amount of games before being forced to wait a little bit, and those particularly impatient mobile gamers can pay a buck of two to continue playing regardless of their luck or skill. In overall, Futurama: Game of Drones is a well-made mobile game worth giving a shot if you’re looking for a casual gaming experience.
