PayPal might no longer be tethered to eBay these days, but it’s still the de facto payment method for one of the most popular online shopping sites across the world. Not to mention the fact that PayPal is one of the most-used payment services and money-moving names online throughout much of the developed world. Such a service needs to have a robust online and mobile presence, and while the mobile webapp is well, not great, the Android app has at least always been dependable if nothing else. Now, with the release of version 6.0, PayPal has given the app a whole new makeover, and it seems as though people are responding positively to it.
The new UI appears to be a sort of compromise between something that would look at home on iOS and something that wouldn’t entirely look out of place on Android. It seems to be the same route that a number of companies are taking these days with their Android apps, and while it won’t appeal to everyone, the app does at least look a little more modern now. The app seems to be using a font choice that looks remarkably familiar to the Ubuntu font and with so many circles on display now, it’s hard not to see where they’ve taken inspiration from iOS.
The update to version 6.0.9, which is downloadable here, isn’t just about a new interface however, as there’s support for fingerprint sensors on devices running Marshmallow, the ability to create a new PayPal account there and then in the app. Quick actions should help users perform standard tasks nice and quickly, and it does appear as though the app has gotten something of a speed boost, too. The update should be rolling out throughout the Play Store now, but if you haven’t gotten it yet, you can download it above. We’re still missing things like a more advanced Android Wear app and the Marshmallow fingerprint support doesn’t appear to be working on all devices running Android 6.0 or above, which is a shame, but we’re assuming PayPal is probably working on it.
