Samsung is holding their Unpacked event in Barcelona next Sunday, February 21st. This is where they are expected to announce the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge. Samsung has been releasing teaser videos for the event in the past few weeks, and today we got yet another one from Samsung. However it doesn’t really tease the Galaxy S7 or Galaxy S7 Edge. It appears to be teasing the Gear 360, which is said to be a 360-degree camera for shooting VR footage. The tweet from Samsung Mobile says “Change the way you capture every angle on 2.21.16″. Which leads us to think that it’s either the Gear 360 camera or the camera on the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge.
Either way, we’ll find out in less than a week when Samsung unveils all of the surprises in Barcelona, Spain. If it is referring to the camera on the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge – which is slated to be a 12-megapixel camera – it would be interesting to see what kind of features the camera will have. Seeing as the Galaxy S6 featured a 16-megapixel camera, going down (in some consumers eyes) is not always a good thing. However they are rumored to be using the same Sony sensor that is in the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X, which has performed quite well.
But when it comes to the Gear 360, this could be another option for those looking to shoot video in virtual reality. There are already a few cameras that can shoot in 360-degrees, like those from GoPro. And having more competition is always good, as it can drive down the cost of the 360-degree cameras. Something that is needed if VR is really going to take off. We may see a new iteration of the Gear VR announced at Mobile World Congress as well, for the new Galaxy S7. However that isn’t set in stone, and we haven’t seen much in terms of rumors that point that way.
We will be in Barcelona for Samsung’s big event – as well as the other events from LG, Huawei and Sony – to bring you the latest on everything happening at Mobile World Congress.
