Huawei enjoyed an interesting year for 2015. The business released a beautiful, elegant new Android Wear smartwatch and in the fall, the new Nexus 6P in conjunction with Google. In addition, Huawei’s sub-brands, Honor and HiSilicon, were also busy. We saw numerous Honor-branded handsets released and HiSilicon released the first of the new generation chipsets based around the ARM Cortex-A72 application core in the shape of the Kirin 950. Towards the end of 2015, Honor released a new mid-range device, the Honor 5X. We covered the European release earlier today and now British carrier, Three, have reported that they will have the exclusive rights to sell the Honor 5X, starting a week from tomorrow on Friday 12 February 2016.
With regard to the Honor 5X, this is based around a 5.5-inch, 1080p resolution (that is, 1,920 by 1,080 pixels, IPS LCD panel. There’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 System-on-Chip running the show, which is based around two clusters of the ARM Cortex-A53 application core; four are clocked at up to 1.5 GHz and the remaining four at up to 1.2 GHz. The Snapdragon is backed up by either 2 GB or 3 GB or RAM and the Adreno 405 GPU. There’s 16 GB of local storage plus a MicroSD slot, which supports cards of up to 128 GB in capacity. Honor have given the 5X a 13MP camera around the back and a 5MP front facing unit for selfies, and there’s a fixed 3,000 mAh battery and a high performance fingerprint scanner. The 5X is a dual-SIM handset, and Three have confirmed that the model they are selling will indeed be the dual SIM model. Software is in the shape of Android 5.1.1 Lollipop running under Honor’s EMUI 3.1 interface and the device is available in three colors: white, black and gold.
At the time of publication, Three are yet to confirm the pricing of the new Honor 5X or the colors. However, as with all of their contracts, the device comes with included international roaming for a number of popular British holiday destinations, free 4G LTE where available and a range of plans including unlimited on-device data. Three have also been voted as the UK’s most reliable network for the last six quarters.
