Sony has introduced their flagship Xperia Z5 line of smartphones back at iFA 2015. The company has unveiled the Xperia Z5 Mini, Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Premium. The Xperia Z5 Mini can actually be considered the mid-range handset here, but the Xperia Z5 and Z5 Premium are surely flagship offerings by Sony. Now, Sony did unveil their Xperia X line of devices during MWC in Barcelona last month, and it seems like this line will replace Sony Xperia Z line. The company’s officials have confirmed that the Xperia Z is a thing of the past, but it remains to be seen if Sony intends to introduce new flagship devices soon, or is the Xperia X Performance their new flagship.
That being said, we have some good news for those of you who did purchase one of the Xperia Z5 devices, as it seems Sony started rolling out Android Marshmallow to those smartphones. This update has recently hit Japanese Xperia Z5 devices, NTT DoCoMo’s units, to be more exact, and it is now rolling out globally. This information comes from Xperia Blog, a site which is not affiliated with Sony, but they’re usually quite accurate with such info, and the video embedded down below basically proves it. Keep in mind that this is the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update, not the 6.0.1 version, but the update does include February 2016 security patches from Google, which is interesting. This update brings along many enhancements to Sony’s Xperia Z5 devices, mostly native Android Marshmallow features which were introduced during Google’s Nexus event last year. You’ll get the enhanced privacy settings (app permissions), better battery life thanks to Doze… and a ton more options. It is also worth mentioning that Sony added a number of features to their very own launcher, which could come in handy.
That is pretty much it. Keep in mind that the update might not reach your device that soon, especially if your device is carrier branded. If you’d like to check out what’s new in this new version of Android for the Xperia Z5 devices, check out the video embedded down below, and stay tuned for further updates.
